Recall Details

Defect: As part of our continuous quality monitoring we have found that the leaf springs of the front axle could break on Actros 963 vehicles. The cause of the breakage may be edge corrosion due to insufficient descaling or surface defects during the rolling process. Each of the two fault profiles can cause a fracture independently of the other. The defective part analysis indicates that edge corrosion may result from scale residues not fully removed during the supplier's production run. Additionally the fault profile reveals that surface defects occurring during the rolling process—specifically near the edge—coincide with the initiation of breakage which is attributed to system malfunctions at the supplier's end. The progressive edge corrosion or the surface defects from the rolling process can lead to material fatigue in the affected area. Failure of the component or breakage at the heavily stressed points of the lower leaf spring could be the consequence. Partial component loss during driving operation cannot be ruled out. The size of a potentially lost leaf spring part depends on the individual fracture pattern. This can increase the risk of an accident.
